In a neo-Victorian world of worker bees, toy theatres and impeccably arranged cucumber sandwiches, six actor-musicians bring Oscar Wilde‘s The Importance of Being Earnest vividly to life through exhilarating ensemble storytelling. At the start of each performance, a coin toss decides who will play Algernon and Jack, and who will become Gwendolen and Cecily, creating a genuinely unique performance every night while celebrating the playful unpredictability at the heart of Wilde‘s comedy.
Featuring original English parlour songs, handcrafted period-inspired costumes, live music and dazzling multi-roling, the production revels in the ingenuity of theatrical transformation. Performers switch characters in an instant, worlds emerge from elegant simplicity, and Wilde‘s sparkling language remains at the centre of the experience.
Developed through rehearsals in London and an artistic residency in the Norman countryside, the production draws inspiration from the great European repertory tradition, where artists live, rehearse and create together as a company. That collaborative spirit continues on tour as the ensemble travels across twelve countries, presenting more than 150 performances for audiences throughout Europe.
Both visually inventive and deeply faithful to Wilde‘s text, this Earnest combines comic precision, musicality and theatrical imagination in equal measure.
